If your dentist has said that you need a root canal, you may be wondering why it is necessary and what it will repair. It is a simple procedure that replaces the pulp, the soft inner core, inside your tooth so that you can keep your original teeth.

A root canal saves teeth so that you do not have to have it removed or risk further damage to the tooth. You will also not have to worry about the added pressure on the teeth surrounding it which could end up damaging them as well.

A root could help you if you have experienced any of these problems:
  • Abscesses inside your mouth or recurring pimples on the gums.
  • Pain that can range from minimal to severe. The tooth may also feel as though the pain is throbbing or hurt more when you bite down on something.
  • Your dentist may have seen a problem by viewing your x-rays.
  • One tooth may be darker than the other
  • You may have a nerve that is exposed.
The dentist may also use further testing before doing the procedure.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Many people fear hearing the dreaded words, “root canal”, but it is a relatively simple procedure. It is nothing that you need to worry about. Most patients agree that the pain they feel before having it done is worse than the actual procedure or afterward. The reason why the pain before having a root canal done is because the tooth is badly decayed on the inside where the pulp of your tooth is and the infection can run down into the roots sparking sometimes very extreme pain. If you remove the pulp that is damaged or decayed, you will quickly discover you no longer have as much pain inside of your mouth. In some severely infected teeth, you may need two appointments to clear up the infection.
Step 1: To have a root canal done, you will visit your dentist where the infected tooth will be numbed.

Step 2: Once this is done, your dentist will drill a small hole into the tooth. The pulp and damaged nerves will be removed.

Step 3: The inside of the tooth will be cleaned and sealed with material that will not allow the tooth to become further infected.

Step 4: The final step is to put in a filling.

Root Canal – Frequently Asked Questions

If your teeth or gums become sensitive to hot and cold substances upon removal, if your teeth hurt while chewing or when pressure is applied to the tooth, or if your gums are swollen, you may need a root canal. The aforementioned symptoms are common symptoms of a damaged nerve or pulp, which can be removed through root canal.
A common misconception is that root canals can lead to infections. Root canals actually remove the infected nerve or pulp and prevent infections from spreading to other parts of the body. Antibiotics may be prescribed after the procedure, but only to clear out the previous infection, not stop new ones.
If your tooth infection is mild to moderate, a root canal will often be more appropriate than an extraction. Extractions should only be used when the tooth has become damaged beyond repair due to infection. Extraction is the complete removal of the tooth, while a root canal only removes the damaged nerve and tissue, so performing a root canal on a severely damaged tooth will only cause more pain and will cost more compared to simply removing the infected tooth.
You will most likely have to have a crown put in after a root canal. This is because the tooth that was previously infected will be much more fragile without a filling or a crown, so the crown is applied to strengthen it. The tooth will still be somewhat fragile.
With the use of various local anesthetic solutions and modern techniques it is very rare to have any sensations in the tooth during the treatment. For the first few days after treatment, It is normal for your tooth to be sensitive to biting. This discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescription medications.
Prices depend on the degree of difficulty and severity of problem. We offer root canal services from $399 for the anterior tooth with FREE initial consultation. Call us for a quote for your root canal treatment.
