What is Gum Reconstruction?

Gum reconstruction is a dental procedure that is used to rebuild an area of your gum that has developed a severe, debilitating disease. Antibiotics and root scaling methods typically are tried, before you have a reconstruction process completed.

Benefits of a Flap Procedure or Graft Process

Gum reconstruction is recommended when your gum disease or periodontitis needs further treatment, including the following:
  • A reconstruction is needed for severe gum disease that is not responding to antibiotics, a root planing or a gum scaling procedure
  • The location in your mouth needs to be surgically cleaned of disease and inflammatory tissues
  • You may be experiencing damaged bone or damaged roots of your teeth

  • A flap procedure is used to clean and repair a damaged mouth area. A graft is selected as your treatment, if the damaged area is larger or more complex. Your dentist can explain these further

Gum Reconstruction Solutions

State-of-the-art dental solutions are offered for your repair therapies. You will need to follow your after-surgery instructions carefully, in order to heal quickly. Your dentist has determined that your dental problems are severe enough to require an extensive and more complex procedure.

Your Dental Surgery Procedure

The following steps are included with a flap or graft dental surgery procedure:

Step 1: A flap process is used to stop your gum disease, by cleaning the mouth area surgically, through excision methods.

Step 2: Your surgeon will pull back a section of your gums and clean the bone and root areas.

Step 3: A graft is a section of skin and bone that is removed from a clean area of your mouth, or is taken from an artificial tissue bank. This portion of tissue is surgically sewn into the cleaned section.

Step 4: The repaired sections of your mouth are smoothed and reshaped.
