What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental-Bridges-2
A dental bridge is for patients who have gaps in the spacing of their bite due to missing teeth. Dentists recommend a bridge to fill the gap left by these missing teeth.

Once a tooth or teeth are lost due to decay, gum disease or other dental problem, the teeth that are left will attempt to slide into the empty space left behind. This can be bad for your mouth and the way you chew. Not only are missing teeth bad for your bite, they can change your smile into something undesirable. Filling the space left by missing teeth makes for a better smile and healthier mouth.

Bridges are custom made to fit a false tooth in the space left by a missing tooth or teeth. It fills the gap and keeps teeth in place. There are three types of dental bridges:
  • Maryland Bridge is a bridge used for filling the gap in the front of the mouth. These are constructed using metal wings or porcelain attached to the fake tooth. The wings are anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap.
  • Fixed Bridge fills the space left by missing teeth connecting the artificial tooth or teeth between crowns. These dental crowns are cemented to the teeth on either side of the space. This permanent bridge is not removable.
  • Cantilever Bridge This is also a permanent bridge. It is bonded to a single tooth when there is only one tooth available for an anchor.

How a Dental Bridge Can Benefit Your Mouth

There are many ways a dental bridge are beneficial.
  • Cosmetically they will restore the way you smile and maintain the shape of your face.
  • If spaces where teeth are missing are left empty, the remaining teeth will move into the place where there is space.
  • This changes the shape of your face and may even alter the jaw line.

A dental work bridge, which are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth, cannot be removed while a denture is removable. A bridge is often used to replace one or two missing teeth. Dentures are used with patients who have several teeth missing. Depending on your situation your dentist will choose the right one for you.
